Set up Sideplay
Five minutes, once. After that, your TV shows up whenever you open Control Center.
1. Install it on your TV
Install Sideplay from Google Play on your Android TV or Google TV, or ask the TV's Google Assistant to install "Sideplay for AirPlay". It's free.
2. Open it once
Open Sideplay from the TV's apps. It shows the name your iPhone will see, like Living Room TV (AirPlay). You can rename it in Settings.
3. Let it open by itself (recommended)
So the TV can switch to Sideplay when you start casting, allow Display over other apps:
- In Sideplay, select Let Sideplay open automatically if you see it. It takes you to the switch. On some TVs the button is Open Sideplay's settings instead; follow the next step from there.
- Otherwise open the TV's Settings → Apps → Special app access → Display over other apps and turn it on for Sideplay.
Without it Sideplay still works, but you may need to open it yourself before casting.
4. Connect your iPhone or iPad
- Make sure the phone and TV are on the same Wi-Fi network.
- Open Control Center, tap Screen Mirroring and choose your TV.
- To send just a video, tap the AirPlay icon in YouTube, Photos or Safari and choose your TV.
5. Optional: require a code
In Sideplay's Settings, turn on Require a code to connect. The TV shows a 4-digit code the first time each phone connects; after that the phone reconnects without it.
Troubleshooting
My TV doesn't appear on the iPhone
- Check both devices are on the same Wi-Fi (not a guest network).
- Open Sideplay on the TV once, then try again.
- Restart the TV's Wi-Fi or the router if it still doesn't appear.
Google Drive plays sound but no picture
Google Drive only sends audio over AirPlay, to any receiver. Use Screen Mirroring for Drive videos instead.
The screen stays black while mirroring
Stop mirroring on the phone and start it again. If it keeps happening, turn off Use H.265 (HEVC) in Sideplay's Settings.
Video stops when my phone locks
Some apps, like YouTube, pause AirPlay when the phone locks. Videos from Safari and Photos keep playing.
